Items include H1N1 flu infection control stations and a calming art installation for cancer patients

SAN JOSE, Calif.—November 23, 2009—This giving season the Valley Medical Center Foundation has kicked off its first-ever Holiday Wish List. The VMC Foundation seeks cash donations so that hospital staff can receive much-needed items to improve patient health, safety and comfort at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and the community clinics.

“During these tough economic times, we have to work harder than ever before to find the resources we need to provide the best care to our patients,” said Christopher Wilder, executive director of the VMC Foundation. “The Holiday Wish List gives my colleagues and me an opportunity to raise money for some very important projects suggested by the hospital’s employees.”

Staff submitted more than 40 suggestions for items to raise money for on the Holiday Wish List. A committee narrowed the list to four of the most critical items, worth just over $30,000 in all, including:

  • Flu infection control stations to be placed at all hospital entrances and the clinics. These stations help visitors self-screen for illness, offer antibacterial gel and provide up-to-the-minute information on vaccines and outbreaks.
  • A soothing art installation in VMC’s Sobrato Cancer Center, which features the state-of-the-art Linear Accelerator. The artworks will help reduce patients’ feelings of anxiety of cancer diagnosis and treatment.
  • A motorized patient lift to position patients weakened by disease, or who are paraplegic or quadriplegic, on the imaging tables used by technologists and doctors. The motorized lift will reduce stress for patients and staff, and minimize the chance of pain and injury.
  • Monitoring devices to prevent brain injury patients from taking dangerous falls while in the hospital. These patients are at a very high risk of falling if they try to get out of bed on their own. A fall could result in a broken bone or other trauma.

The VMC Foundation raises funds and awareness for the entire Santa Clara Valley Health & Hospital System. Donations for the Holiday Wish List can be made online at www.vmcfoundation.org/wishlist with credit card or PayPal, or checks can be sent to:

World Premiere of The Kite Runner at San Jose Repertory Theatre

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009 Posted in Press Room | Comments Off

SJ Rep - Kite Runner

San Jose Repertory Theatre to Stage the World Premiere of
The Kite Runner, Presented by Hitachi Data Systems
Best-selling novel about the friendship of
two Afghan boys is adapted for the stage

SAN JOSE, CA. (February 24, 2009) — San Jose Repertory Theatre prepares to make history with the world premiere of the stage adaptation of Khaled Hosseini’s international best-selling novel, The Kite Runner – a haunting story of friendship and redemption in modern Afghanistan. Adapted by Bay Area resident Matthew Spangler and directed by David Ira Goldstein, artistic director of the Arizona Theatre Company, The Kite Runner runs from March 21-April 19, 2009 at the San Jose Repertory Theatre, 101 Paseo de San Antonio in downtown San Jose. Press Opening is March 27 at 8:00 p.m.

Tickets are available at the San Jose Rep Box Office at 101 Paseo de San Antonio or can be purchased online at www.SJRep.com or by calling (408) 367-7255.

The Kite Runner is a tale told through the lives of two boys growing up in Kabul in the same household, but in two starkly different worlds. Amir is the son of a wealthy yet emotionally distant businessman, while Hassan is the son of Amir’s father’s servant, a shunned ethnic minority. Despite the disparity in social positions, the two grow up inseparable until Amir and his father flee the country during the Soviet invasion. Years later, Amir returns to Afghanistan to seek out his old friend and atone for his youthful cowardice. But fate, global politics and historical tragedy threaten Amir’s ability to make amends for his past.

“The characters in The Kite Runner all struggle with the most basic of human emotions: love, envy, fear, joy and guilt,” observes Director David Ira Goldstein. “In Amir’s struggles, we all recognize our own failings, and in his redemption, we discover a hopeful way forward.”

“Its epic structure – spanning the continents and nearly 30 years – its powerful moments of high drama and its engaging characters make this an ideal story for live performance,”states Playwright Matthew Spangler. “I fell in love with the book and knew right away that it would make an excellent play.”

Spangler’s adaptation of The Kite Runner highlights the story of one nation’s struggle to triumph over the forces of violence – forces that continue to threaten Afghanistan. With the world’s attention once again focusing on Afghanistan, the production is as relevant today as when the book was first published in 2003. The novel enjoyed international success, was made into a thought-provoking movie and promises to create a sensation on the stage.

“When I wrote this book, I thought it would find its niche, most likely among readers who had an interest in the Middle East and Central Asia. I never expected this story to make the impact that it did,” states Khaled Hosseini, author of The Kite Runner. “Over the years, the story has continually confounded my expectations and expanded its readership. Again, I think it had to do with the universality of the themes. No matter where you are born, what language you speak or what religion you practice, there are human experiences that bind us all, and The Kite Runner speaks to those experiences.”

Khaled Hosseini, author of the international best-sellers The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, was born in 1965 and grew up in Kabul. Hosseini and his family were granted political asylum to the United States and moved to California in 1980. He earned a medical degree from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and was a practicing internist when he penned his first novel, The Kite Runner. In 2006, Hosseini was named a Goodwill Envoy for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. He lives in the Bay Area with his wife and two children.

Matthew Spangler is an assistant professor of Performance Studies in the departments of Theatre Arts and Communication Studies at San José State University. He has adapted more than 30 novels and short stories for productions throughout the U.S., France, England and Ireland.

David Ira Goldstein is the artistic director at the Arizona Theatre Company and directed the San Jose Rep’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. As the artistic director of the Southwest’s largest professional theatre, Goldstein has directed more than 35 productions ranging from classics to new plays to musicals, including the world premieres of Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure, Inventing van Gogh, Rocket Man, Private Eyes, Over the Moon and Dracula by Steven Dietz, One Crazy Day by Roger Downy and For Better or Worse by Geoff Hoyle.

The Kite Runner’s outstanding cast features actors from both sides of the country, including Barzin Akhavan (Amir), Demosthenes Chrysan (General Taheri), Gregor Paslawsky (Rahim Khan) and James Saba (Ali), all of New York City, and Thamos Fiscelle (Baba) of Los Angeles. Among the Bay Area talent are Craig Piaget (Young Amir), Lowell Abellon (Young Hassan), Rinabeth Apostol (Soraya) and Adam Yazbeck (Assef).

The world premiere production of The Kite Runner is presented by Hitachi Data Systems, co-sponsors are NBC 11 Bay Area and the San Jose Mercury News, the participating sponsor is SanDisk, and it’s supported, in part, by a Cultural Affairs grant from the City of San Jose.

California Construction College

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 Posted in Press Room | No Comments »

Building Contractors, Labor and Education Form Partnership to Build California Construction College in San Jose
New School to Start in Fall 2009

San Jose, CA—October 23, 2008—A coalition of construction employers, labor and the San Jose/Evergreen Community College District has been working for four years to develop a solution to the construction industry’s need for more highly trained construction managers, project engineers, job estimators and supervisors to replace retiring Baby Boomers. The group, operating under the imprimatur of the Santa Clara County Construction Careers Association (S4CA), today announced the formation of the California Construction College (CCC), which will be located on the San José City College Campus.

The college will benefit construction workers who can fill the white collar jobs becoming available. Many of them have been apprentices, learning their trades from experienced workers. Some of them have parents who wanted their children to earn a college degree instead of working in the construction industry. The California Construction College will award a Bachelor of Science degree, giving credit for past work experience, and the classes will be scheduled for the convenience of working students.

“When parents, students and educators understand that an apprenticeship and a college degree are no longer mutually exclusive in the construction industry, there will be less resistance to our youth pursuing the Trades,” said Neil Struthers, President and CEO of the Santa Clara & San Benito Counties Building & Construction Trades Council.

California Department of Industrial Relations Director John C. Duncan said at the announcement ceremony, “The CCC is designed to attract both high school graduates and skilled workers who are looking for professional careers in the construction industry and as CTE teachers. Students continue to work in their professions and earn a living while learning the skills necessary to reach their individual career goals. The CCC also plays an important role in meeting the governor’s job creation and infrastructure rebuilding priorities.”

There is an ongoing concern that contractors from other states and even other countries will profit from the huge volume of work generated from billions of dollars in infrastructure bonds for the construction of schools, medical centers, nursing facilities, and other buildings in California. With highly trained mid-managers graduating from the CCC, local and California based contractors will be able to expand their business management from within their own companies and those construction jobs will go to California-based companies, keeping jobs and tax revenues in the state.

“The California Construction College will also train senior construction workers so they are qualified to teach Career Technical Education (CTE) at college and high school level,” said Rosa Pérez, Chancellor of the San José/Evergreen Community College District. “We’ve learned that being a software engineer isn’t the most stable job. Coding and development can always be outsourced. Construction work is site-specific, and CCC will ensure that those jobs remain here in the Silicon Valley.”

“For contractors, this college gives us the opportunity to attract more quality workers into our craft and also have current valuable field experienced personnel gain additional training that could result in them developing into future management staff,” said Tony Mirenda, CEO of TBI Construction and Construction Management as well as co-chair of S4CA. “The students at CCC must have completed high school to be admitted, and this will discourage students from joining the already large population of dropouts in California. As in other professions, the people who are the most motivated to learn and succeed do so, and the graduates from CCC will be in high demand.”
