Cleveland Ballet was invited by San Jose to perform in San Jose during the 1985 Christmas season, when they would be competing with 11 other Nutcracker performances. Add to this the Bay Area's lack of respect for San Jose as a cultural center. PRx's research-based communications strategy included intensive pre-publicity, direct mail, costumed character appearances, and sponsorships by local companies to cover additional costs for promotion. The performance tickets were 99.6% sold, we raised more than $350,000, and San Francisco media provided respectful coverage.
Food donations declined in the recession of the 1990s, when demand for food help rose past 170,000 people a month. PRx launched corporate food challenge with a prominent CEO. The first such honorary chair of the Second Harvest Holiday Food Drive was PRx client T.J. Rodgers of Cypress Semiconductor, who raised more than 1.1 million pounds of food and $102,000, up from the previous year’s total of 660,000 pounds. Subsequent chairs included CEOs of Tandem, Amdahl, Applied Materials, Cisco and HP.

PRx originated the grocery-bag-in-the daily-newspaper concept, which helped donations reach more than six million pounds of food in a matter of three years.
